Bridging the Gap Between the Gym and the Golf Course

If you haven’t noticed, professional sports is a big business. Our television stations are flooded with various games, matches, rounds, etcetera each weekend, and often during the week, too. And sports’ popularity seems to be growing exponentially every day.

In response, the professional and amateur ranks are becoming more crowded and competitive, which raises the bar for success in a sport. The world of golf is no different. And competition is often greatest in the individual sports, as a professional can rise from the ranks of pro/am, college, or simply a great golfer from your local courses.

So, how do you set yourself apart and elevate your own game? The answer comes not from the course or driving range, but rather, the gym and a knowledgeable personal trainer, preferably one certified by the Titleist Performance Institute.

Equipment Only Goes So Far

Traditionally, golf has relied on advancements in equipment as the primary answer to an improved game. And, to be fair, there have been some huge improvements in both equipment materials and club/shaft design. Compare the traditional wood, iron, and steel clubs of the past with the composite material shafts and heads of today. Distance and control have increased and overall scores decreased. But, this technology is not necessarily exclusive to any one person or group, including the pros. The equipment advantage dissipates. Furthermore, the equipment is only as good as the body moving it.

The Athletic Advantage

Because equipment can only do so much, more and more golfers, of all abilities, are looking to the gym as a source for improved play. And not simply for distance. The advantages of greater physicality can be, but not limited to:

Greater overall mobility and flexibility

Being able to move properly can be one of the biggest advantages to your overall game. When your muscles and body move properly, you do less work for greater results.

Improved muscular endurance

Simply running out of gas on the course can be extremely detrimental to your game. Power through the back nine with less of the physical let-down which often undermines a good player’s game.

Reduction in injury and/or downtime

When your body moves in the correct form and your musculature and flexibility reinforce these movements, the result is a complete physical makeover. The right conditioning supports and protects the body instead of overusing and straining muscles that are not properly conditioned.

Improved cardiovascular and pulmonary functions

Another aspect of conditioning for endurance comes from increased blood flow and the oxygen/carbon dioxide cycle. Your muscles rely on a steady supply of oxygen and removal of CO2. The better your cardiovascular performs, the better you perform and the quicker you recover.

More Power

Simply being able to swing and move with greater force will equate to you taking more control of your game and overall physiology.
