Two exercises to add power to your golf game

When a potential golf client comes to me inevitably I get asked will your program add distance to my golf game? They have been lifting weights stretching etc yet can’t seem to add any yards to their drive. One thing they may be lacking in their golf fitness program is power. Without an increase in power production it is hard to increase your distance. Two exercises that are staples of our training programs at Tampa Strength are Box Jumps and Medicine Ball Slams.

Both exercises work on power production, an absolutely essential component to more distance. Below are two videos that demonstrate a traditional box jump and a 1/2 kneeling Medicine Ball Slam. There are many variations of both of these exercises but these are a good place to start.

The first key to box jumps is choosing the right height box. The box should be a height that is challenging but still allows for the athlete to land on balance in an athletic power position. The other cues for box jumps are: driving through the grind, exploding up and on the box, and lastly landing quietly. Typically we prescribe 2-3 sets of 4-6 reps with 1-2 min break between sets.

For 1/2 kneeling medicine ball slams it is essential to keep your self grounded by actively pushing your front foot into the ground. Keep your torso up right over you hips. Place the ball over head and keep tension through your entire body. Explosively slam the ball outside of your lead foot maintaining your balance throughout. The reps and set are the same as the Box jumps, 2-3 sets of 4-6 reps with 1-2 min rest between sets.
